Project Description
On behalf of Weener XL and the municipality of ’s-Hertogenbosch, we have fulfilled the role of delegated client for the construction of a new 14,000 m² work and development centre. This building offers Weener XL a modern and welcoming space where more than 17,000 visitors can be welcomed and guided annually. The goal of Weener XL is to support vulnerable groups in society, such as people with disabilities, the long-term unemployed, and others facing barriers in the labour market.
A Sustainable and Energy-Neutral Design
The new building, located on the former Michel site, has been designed as one of the most sustainable buildings in ‘s-Hertogenbosch. The building is entirely energy-neutral and gas-free and follows the ‘no waste, no failure’ principle. It is equipped with solar panels and heat pumps, which meet the energy needs. A large part of the roof is planted with sedum, contributing to biodiversity and insulation. The building is constructed from modular elements, facilitating reuse and flexibility.
Circular Bio-based Materials
A conscious choice has been made for circular materials in the construction, including wooden structures that contribute to a CO₂ storage of at least 1,150 tonnes. This has been achieved through the use of wooden columns, wooden beams, wooden façade elements with flax insulation, and wooden hollow-core slabs. Thanks to this modular wooden construction with a base dimension of 7.5 x 7.5 metres, the building can be used flexibly. The bio-based materials used can be absorbed by nature or easily reused, resulting in the property having a minimal ecological impact.
Inspiring and Flexible Workplace
Weener XL offers a healthy and inspiring work environment that is focused on the human scale. The building has a warm appearance thanks to the chosen materials and includes flexible and fixed workstations, outdoor spaces, reception areas, meeting rooms, social spaces, and production areas. Due to the modular design, the layout can be adapted as needed, offering infinite combinations and possibilities. The space for production and logistics is also versatile thanks to the modular design.
Recognition by the National Timber Construction Award 2023
The new construction of Weener XL was nominated in 2023 for the National Timber Construction Award by Houtblad, in the “Commercial Timber Construction” category. This nomination underscores the innovative and sustainable nature of the project and is recognition of the contribution that timber construction can make to modern, circular architecture.
With this new building, Weener XL will have a future-proof, sustainable, and inspiring workplace with which it can continue its social mission in a responsible and innovative environment.
