Project Description
The renovation project Buitenveldertselaan 148 in Amsterdam concerns the transformation and extension of an existing building. This building, originally consisting of a basement and four floors with a total gross floor area of around 4,750 m², has undergone a complete metamorphosis by adding an extra floor and a completely new facade. Although the original shell has largely been retained, the new design with modern installations gives the building a future-proof and impressive appearance.
Function distribution and intended uses
The ground floor and basement are designated for retail space of approximately 960 m², while the four floors above, with a total area of around 3,170 m², are configured as office space. This provides the building with flexible opportunities for both retail and business functions, contributing to a vibrant and multi-purpose destination within the neighbourhood.
Facade Design and Materials
The revamped façade is constructed of timber frame elements (HSB) combined with large retro aluminium window frames with rod detailing. The use of a lot of glass, aluminium accents, light-grey granite bands along the floor heights and dark ceramic tiles gives the building a modern, business-like appearance. The façade offers an open and transparent character and contributes to the building's professional, contemporary identity.
Architectural Design Vision
The design, provided by Dam & Partners Architects, enhances the open, accessible character of the building. An inviting and recognisable entrance creates a welcoming impression and adds to its visibility and appeal. The set-back roof structure creates space for a roof terrace overlooking one of Amsterdam's greenest districts, further enhancing the building's attractiveness and functionality.
Planning and delivery
In December 2023, the shop on the ground floor and basement opened. The office spaces on the four upper floors were completed in spring 2024, bringing the building into full use and allowing it to fulfil its new role as a retail and business hub in the district.
